Elements of Analysis

7 November 2007, Huddersfield, United Kingdom

Introduction
More than a thousand million analytical measurements are made each year in the UK, covering manufacturing, clinical, forensic and environmental analysis. This is a rapidly developing discipline, as time for analysis and quantities detectable are decreasing. Measurements are not without problems, however; there is always uncertainty associated with results, which is often underestimated.

This talk will explore the challenges and discuss some of the problems in analysis. Some of the work on chemiluminescence carried out in Roger's research group will be included. The talk will be illustrated with real examples from international trade, forensic science and environmental analysis, including some costly mistakes.
