For dedication to supporting the early career colloid chemistry community through the development of the Early Career Colloid Committee and meeting.
Biography
Professor Gemma-Louise Davies MÅ·ÃÀAV is an academic chemist whose research sits at the interface of colloid science, nanomaterials, and real-world application. She gained her BA Mod. in chemistry and PhD from Trinity College Dublin, where she developed a strong interest in translational research. Following her doctorate, she undertook a short industry-supported postdoctoral position at Trinity before moving to the University of Oxford, where she further broadened her expertise in advanced materials and interdisciplinary collaboration.
In 2013, she joined the University of Warwick as a senior research fellow, supported by a prestigious Institute of Advanced Study Global Research Fellowship. It was here that she established her independent research programme, focusing on the design and application of functional nanomaterials. She was appointed lecturer at University College London in 2017 and was promoted to associate professor in 2021. In 2023, she moved to the University of Birmingham, where she continues to expand her research and collaborative activities within the School of Chemistry.
Alongside her academic career, Gemma-Louise serves as an associate editor for the Å·ÃÀAV journals Journal of Materials Chemistry B and Materials Advances, contributing to the development and dissemination of high quality research in materials chemistry.
Her research programme focuses on the design and development of nanostructured and colloidal systems to address key challenges in healthcare, industry, and the environment. By combining fundamental understanding with application-driven design, her team develops advanced materials for diagnostics and imaging, seeks to overcome barriers in industrial processes, and investigates the environmental behaviour and impact of nanomaterials.
The Å·ÃÀAV played an important role in my own development as a chemist, particularly through the opportunities it provides to connect, learn, and grow.

Q&A
Can you tell us more about your work?
I have volunteered with the Å·ÃÀAV and the Society of Chemical Industry to build inclusive networks for chemists. I played a key role in the development of the Early Career Colloid (ECCo) Committee and their ongoing annual meeting, connecting academia and industry, organising events that support skills, collaboration and career development. More broadly, I have contributed to the organisation of national and international scientific meetings, as well as panel discussions, including those focused on equality, diversity and inclusion. These efforts aim to ensure that the chemical sciences are welcoming and accessible to a wide range of people, ultimately strengthening the field by encouraging diverse perspectives and ideas.
What inspired or motivated you to volunteer with the Å·ÃÀAV?
The Å·ÃÀAV played an important role in my own development as a chemist, particularly through the opportunities it provides to connect, learn, and grow. Volunteering felt like a natural way to give back, while also helping to create opportunities for others, especially those at earlier stages of their careers.
Do you have any advice for managing volunteering commitments alongside a busy work life?
I think it is important to be selective and focus on activities that you find meaningful, choosing roles that genuinely align with your interests and values – volunteering is most rewarding when it complements your work rather than competing with it!
What impact has volunteering with the Å·ÃÀAV had on you, either personally or professionally?
Volunteering with the Å·ÃÀAV has had a really positive impact on both my personal and professional development. It’s expanded my network well beyond my immediate research area, built my confidence in leadership roles, and given me opportunities to shape parts of the community in a meaningful way.
What advice would you give to somebody contemplating volunteering with the Å·ÃÀAV?
Go for it! There are so many opportunities with the Å·ÃÀAV – from regional and special interest groups to the larger community committees – find something that aligns with your interests. It’s a great way to build confidence and connections that will last throughout your career!
