Using 3D paint on burettes and pipettes

A student in further education was studying Chemistry in order to go on to study Medicine at university.

A part of their course involved a practical assessment. The student has a visual impairment so reading volumes on equipment such as burettes and pipettes is challenging.

Using 3D paint, it was possible to mark the gradation lines on the burettes and pipettes. This enabled the student to successfully participate in the practical assessment.

This shows that access solutions can be simple and inexpensive yet still be effective. It also highlights the importance that chemistry should be accessible and inclusive at all levels, enabling all students to pursue their chosen career path.

As part of the course my student had to complete an assignment which is the assessed practical, but reading volumes in a burette and pipette was extremely difficult. We overcame this by using 3D paint to mark the gradation lines.
