Periodic table for people with visual impairments
A modified periodic table intended to reduce strain on vision during lessons.
Through an Å·ÃÀAV-funded programme supporting inclusion and diversity in special schools in Kenya, a challenge was identified: the periodic table was often hard to read for visually impaired and low-vision students. The team developed and produced a modified periodic table, intended to reduce strain on vision during lessons. This was printed and distributed to the school. The team also noticed challenges relating to laboratory practical classes in special schools. They donated a few accessories including burettes, pipettes, and personal protective equipment that were affordable within their budget.
These changes helped to improve access to chemical sciences learning in school in multiple areas, including for practical sessions. Having assistance from an outside team was welcomed by the school management as the team were able to identify challenges and to help to provide practical solutions.
These efforts help put a smile on the faces of the school management and improved access to chemical sciences learning. The impact was greatly appreciated and helped the learners engage more in practically oriented studies.
