Neurodiversity inclusion through improving communications of policy and procedure

In an industry setting, an Å·ÃÀAV project facilitated work with Genius Within to support group coaching and improved approaches to communication.

This was particularly to make communication more inclusive for neurodiverse people. The programme encouraged improved team working and identified changes in how detailed and complex procedural information could be communicated.

Instead of large amounts of dense narrative text, multiple different methods of communication were identified to be needed. This includes breaking up the text into smaller sections of information and providing recorded video versions of information, which illustrate the points being described. Training is also provided to help people to use Microsoft tools such as the Read Aloud feature. These are relatively simple things, which make a difference if reading dense text is particularly challenging.

We can showcase different ways of communicating within a team, showing how we can do it differently when communicating really important information, such as laboratory procedures. I think that these things are good practice, because not everybody learns in the way that we've set out for people to learn. We literally put people in front of a computer for days reading policy, lab procedure documents and so on – and now we are trying to avoid that.
