Hearing aids and modern building design

A senior academic can teach confidently in labs without experiencing any problems cause by background noise.

Modern hearing aids have more sophisticated noise filters, providing better noise control and making them much more effective at filtering out background noise such as the noise from fume hoods in the laboratory. Filter settings include noise reduction and enabling the device to focus on voices. As a result, a senior academic can teach confidently in labs without experiencing any problems.

Modern accessible lab design helps, too, with sound baffling in place which also reduces background noise.

Previously, the academic had experienced challenges with the level of background noise in laboratories, which made it very difficult to teach at times. This included sometimes needing to hand over teaching to a colleague because they couldn’t hear properly. The old building which the lab used to be based in had lots of rumbling sounds in the background, and even the emergency alarm would be difficult to hear, meaning that the Professor needed a pager as part of their Personal Emergency Evacuation Plan.

Better hearing aids and a new, better designed modern lab now means that these are no longer problems.

I've got good hearing aids now with much better noise control, so that makes it very helpful to me in teaching. I was teaching lab yesterday with no problem. One thing I'm aware of, is that in the old buildings I would still struggle to hear what people were saying to me.
