Creation of a dedicated role to liaise between the Chemistry School and disability team
This role included meeting with the students within the lab environment to discuss their individual needs.
A school of chemistry at a university found that there was an issue with the communication between the school (specifically the technical staff responsible for undergraduate teaching labs) and the wider university disability team. To overcome this, they created a role to liaise between these two departments. This role included meeting with the students within the lab environment to discuss their individual needs.
This streamlined the initial process of relying on the disability team to upload the student’s needs to the university system so they can be read by the module coordinator who then relays that information to the technical staff of the chemistry lab. This also ensures that the support can be tailored to the chemistry lab environment, meaning that any adjustments suggested are more likely to be helpful.
The creation of this role can positively benefit multiple students, by enabling them to get the adjustments that they need specifically for the chemistry laboratory environment, and giving the school time to put adjustments in place before the students start their studies. It also gives the students one point of contact if they have any difficulties in accessing labs or teaching, rather than needing to contact each module co-ordinator individually.
This allows direct communication between someone in the school familiar with the lab environment and the wider disability team, leading to more relevant information being delivered to the technical staff in the lab. The Liaison then meets with the student, which allows us to ensure that the student is happy with their arrangements - which could range from something as simple as a chair to work seated from, to a dedicated personal assistant - in advance of their classes starting. Finally, this solution also provides the student with a single person in the department that they can come to with queries or concerns about any of their chemistry labs, rather than needing to reach out to every module coordinator individually.
