Professor Diana Anderson

11 December 1940 – 11 October 2024

Diana Anderson profile

Diana gained her BSc from the University of Wales, UK (Faculty of Science) in 1963. She then completed her DipEd from the University of New England, NSW, Australia (Faculty of Education) in 1965, and obtained her MSc from the University of Manchester, UK (Faculty of Medicine) in 1971. She went on to be awarded a PhD in 1973 from the same department.

Professor Anderson did outstanding research in genetic and reproductive toxicology which ultimately led to patents and publications as well as a huge societal impact. She was one of the Founders of the UK Environmental Mutagen Society and established the area of Genetic Toxicology in the UK. Her understanding of basic sciences in the area of DNA damage and its repair allowed her to develop a novel and first of its kind test system using a modified version of the single cell gel electrophoresis assay i.e. the Comet Assay, a test that could detect cancer at an early stage using peripheral blood lymphocytes as a surrogate for tissue samples.

Following the production of a significant textbook on experimental toxicology, Diana proposed a book series to the Å·ÃÀAV on Issues in Toxicology, driven by the need to understand the human and ecological risks of exposure to chemicals and other toxicants. She acted as Editor in Chief, soliciting contributions from her wide circle of colleagues and friends, and the first book was published in 2005. Diana was instrumental in 49 volumes of work including contributions to several volumes. This Series would not have been possible without her formidable character, unstinting dedication and tireless devotion to getting a job finished.

Professor Anderson was awarded UK’s prestigious fellowships such as Fellow of the Royal Society of Biology, Fellow of the Royal College of Pathologists, Fellow of the Institute of Food Science and Technology, Fellow of the Royal Society of Medicine, Fellow of the Å·ÃÀAV, Fellow of the Higher Education Authority, and Fellow of the United Kingdom Environmental Mutagen Society (UKEMS). Apart from these, she was honored internationally for her scientific achievements and the impact she made on the global community. She was elected as a Fellow of the National Academy of Sciences, India (NASI), and Fellow of the Academy of Toxicological Society, USA (FATS).

For the entrepreneurship which she propagated to the student community in Bradford and Yorkshire, she was also awarded a Yorkshire Entrepreneurship Award in 2010 and the English Women's award for Science and Technology in 2018. When she was in ICI plc she was asked to design with an architect and an engineer, a laboratory for the safe handling of carcinogens and mutagens. The design won an award (1978) and many of the features were adapted by the UK's Medical Research Council. She was conferred with the honour of MBE for her contributions to Science and Society in 2022.

Her passing is a huge personal loss as well as a loss for the global scientific fraternity.
