Born in Greenwich, John obtained a BSc. External London in Physical Chemistry, followed by a PhD from Exeter University in 1958. He worked at BX Plastics for 18 months before moving to Acheson Industries Europe, colloidal graphite manufacturers, in their R & D department.

Acheson decided to close their Plymouth research labs in the seventies and build new labs in their hometown of Port Huron, Michigan. The family moved to the USA in January 1978. John remained as Senior Scientist with Acheson until he retired in 1999. During his time he travelled a lot to Korea and Japan on business. Working on TVs and auto projects, he has at least one patent. He was a member of the 欧美AV for more than fifty years.
