BAFTA-winning broadcaster Liz Bonnin and Å·ÃÀAV President Tom Welton star on Episode 1 of 'Brought to You by Chemistry'.

Our brand new podcast, 'Brought to You by Chemistry' has landed, with an initial run of seven podcast episodes focussing on various complexities of the plastic problem – from life-cycle assessment to waste management and innovation.

Available on , , and , 'Episode One – A World Without Plastics' features Å·ÃÀAV President Professor Tom Welton discussing just how intrinsically plastics are entwined with our day to day lives. He is joined in conversation by Liz Bonnin – biochemist and star of the BBC’s Blue Planet Live and Autumnwatch – and our fantastic series host Dr Alex Lathbridge.

Without wanting to give too much away and end up spoiling your first listen, it is fair to say some of the topics discussed may be a little surprising. Did you, for instance, know that global plastics production is due to increase from 400 million tonnes to 800 million tonnes in 20 years? Or that we all most likely have plastics in our urine and our '100% cotton' clothes probably still contain plastics?

Fortunately it’s not all doom and gloom, as our guests also discuss ways of making plastics from sugar cane and olive seeds – a topic which caused an unexpected falling out amongst our guests…

New episodes will be coming out every Wednesday so be sure to subscribe on your favourite platform! As well as those mentioned above it will also shortly be on Google Podcast, TuneIn Radio, and iTunes – so keep an eye out.
