This year’s theme celebrates the hidden chemical processes that quietly power our modern lives. From the energy stored in batteries and the healing properties of medicines, to the innovation behind biodegradable packaging and water purification, Chemistry is at work behind the scenes in ways we often overlook. Invisible Forces invites writers to explore the science that supports our daily routines, comforts, and conveniences; revealing the extraordinary chemistry behind the ordinary.
How to participate:
Submit an original short story on how chemistry can address global challenges. Choose any angle: fiction, non-fiction, essays, historical accounts, science fiction, or mystery. Entries must focus on chemistry’s potential to solve problems like climate change, health crises, or sustainability. Stories should be in prose, without illustrations or diagrams, and be up to 500 words. The competition invites creative, inspiring perspectives on chemistry’s role in building a sustainable future.
Important Notice: To ensure the authenticity and originality of submissions, participants cannot use any AI tools or software to generate or assist in writing their stories. All entries must be the sole work of the individual participant.
Prizes: There will be prizes for the best two short stories will receive vouchers of £250 and £150, respectively.
How to Apply: Entries should be submitted by midnight on 9th February 2026 with the winners announced 9th March 2026 through the Å·ÃÀAV Chilterns and Middlesex local section and Å·ÃÀAV social media streams.
