How to find a needle in a haystack- separation and analytical science

12 November 2014, Fordham, United Kingdom

Introduction
Imagine taking a small aspirin tablet and throwing it into an Olympic sized swimming pool. If you gave our scientists a single drop we could tell you precisely how much drug was in the water.

At LGC in Fordham analytical science can take two forms – looking for a needle in a haystack or measuring a given needle as precisely as possible.

In both cases we are looking for drugs that are (or have been) circulating in the bloodstream. For the sport surveillance group, samples are screened for around 2000 banned substances. On the pharmaceutical side of the business, where a new drug is being investigated, we need to track its progress through the body by sample analysis to ensure patient safety. During this visit you will get presentations from each area and demonstrations of the techniques we use. This will be followed by a tour of our facilities and a chance to meet our sandwich students who are on placement here.
