What made you start your business? Let us know about your new beauty product launch?

The story behind Ooume is deeply rooted in my journey as a first-time mother and the desire to find safe, effective hair care solutions for my son, Amir. During my pregnancy, I was overwhelmed by the lack of options for baby hair care, especially for curly and thick hair like I knew it would be. The struggles continued after his birth, with conventional baby shampoos leaving his curls dry and frizzy. It was during a bath time, where I used his products on my own hair due to me running out of my haircare and not wanting to mix adult hair care products in our bath water, that the idea struck me 鈥 why not create a hydrating shampoo and conditioner that could work for both babies and their parents?

But bringing this idea to life was far from easy. I encountered numerous challenges, from finding manufacturers who shared my values to navigating the complexities of product formulation. However, with each setback, my determination only grew stronger. The name “Ooume” itself is a tribute to Amir’s early expressions and carries a deeper meaning of greatness in Japanese.

The passing of my grandmother further fueled my resolve to create my own products, drawing inspiration from my great-grandmother’s legacy of crafting homemade hair concoctions. With passion and dedication, I delved into the world of product formulation, driven by the belief that every curl and coil deserves gentle, non-toxic care.

Today, Ooume is more than just a brand 鈥 it’s a testament to the power of maternal intuition and the strength that comes from following your heart. It’s about celebrating the beauty of natural hair and providing families with products they can trust.

How does it empower you as a Black Woman in the Beauty Field?

Ooume empowers me as a Black Woman in the Beauty Field by providing a platform to celebrate and showcase our natural beauty and tresses. In an industry that often promotes Eurocentric standards of beauty, Ooume stands as a beacon of representation and inclusivity, embracing and celebrating the diversity of our hair textures and skin tones. Through Ooume, I aim to inspire confidence and self-love among Black women, men, girls and boys, encouraging them to embrace their natural hair and beauty without conforming to societal norms. Additionally, Ooume serves as a testament to the entrepreneurial spirit and creativity within the Black community, proving that we can thrive and excel in the beauty industry on our own terms.

What are 3 of your favorite beauty items you can’t live without?

First and foremost, Ooume’s Hydrating Baby Shampoo & Conditioner holds a special place in my routine. While it’s designed for babies, its gentle formula works wonders on my sensitive skin and helps rejuvenate my curls with much-needed hydration. What I love most is its fragrance-free formula, which ensures a gentle and soothing experience without any overpowering scents.

Next up is my trusty Power Peptide from Skin by Brownlee & Co. This little gem has become my go-to for maintaining clear, hydrated skin. With its gentle cleansing properties and powerful hydration, it keeps breakouts at bay while leaving my complexion feeling refreshed and revitalized.

Finally, I have to give a shoutout to my Gloss Up Color Rich Lip Gloss by the Lip Bar. As someone who’s always on the go, having a reliable lip product is essential, and this gloss delivers every time. Not only does it provide the perfect hint of color and shine, but its moisturizing formula keeps my lips feeling soft and hydrated throughout the day.

These three beauty staples have truly become essential parts of my self-care routine, helping me feel confident and radiant every step of the way.

Anything else our beauty readers should know about you?

Absolutely! As a beauty enthusiast and entrepreneur, I’m deeply passionate about creating products that not only enhance natural beauty but also reflect my own journey and experiences. Growing up, I struggled to find hair care products that catered to the needs of my curls, and that frustration only intensified when I became a mother and faced similar challenges with my son’s hair. That’s when the idea for Ooume was born 鈥 out of a desire to fill a gap in the market and provide safe, effective, and inclusive hair care solutions for families like mine.

Beyond just creating products, I see Ooume as a platform to foster connection and empowerment within the beauty community. I believe that beauty is about more than just outward appearance 鈥 it’s about self-care, confidence, and embracing our unique features. That’s why I’m committed to creating a space where everyone feels seen, heard, and celebrated, regardless of their hair texture or background.

Whether it’s through sharing personal stories, motherhood, offering advice, or simply connecting with fellow beauty lovers, I’m dedicated to building a community where authenticity and inclusivity are at the forefront. Because at the end of the day, beauty is about so much more than just what’s on the surface 鈥 it’s about embracing our true selves and celebrating the beauty within each and every one of us.
